Techna: the story of an independent company that has always known how to innovate

Since it was founded in the 1960s, Techna has established itself as a key player in animal health and nutrition. Our company has grown over the years, exploring new fields of innovation and expanding its horizons internationally.

Relive the highlights of Techna's history with those who have shaped it. Watch exclusive testimonials from former executives and current CEO Jean-Marc Pinsault.

Techna's story began in 1964 in Couëron, near Nantes, at a time of change for agriculture. The countryside of the 1960s was marked by profound changes, with France moving from subsistence farming to a professional model. A wind of modernity that Techna embraced, as there was so much progress to be made and knowledge to be acquired in the field of animal nutrition. Techna first made a name for itself in soilless livestock farming, particularly poultry and rabbits. In 1984, the company decided to set up its own additive premix plant in Malville (44) in order to become more agile and independent.

Experimentation, capitalising on knowledge

In the 90s, Techna realised that it was vital to develop its Research & Development capabilities. The service company joined GIE Euronutrition, a private European experimentation centre specialising in nutrition and livestock management, at its site in Vienne-en-Arthies (95). But the need to acquire technical references became ever more pressing. In 2002, a new milestone was reached within Euronutrition with the creation of the Saint-Symphorien research station (72), which has expanded experimentation resources. At the same time, Techna also began to take a close interest in natural and sustainable processes.

An international turning point for Techna

The entry into the 21st century is marked by a desire for internationalisation. By setting up operations in countries as diverse as Poland, Morocco and India, Techna has been able to adapt its solutions to local conditions while maintaining its high standards. This expansion has not only enabled the company to diversify, but also to strengthen its position in the global animal nutrition market. At the same time, Techna is carrying out a complete overhaul of its manufacturing process at Malville, with a strong emphasis on automation and safety. This approach will be rolled out across all the Group's plants.

Always on the lookout for diversification

Techna has always relied on diversifying its activities to ensure its long-term future. It quickly extended its expertise to animal species other than poultry and rabbits, and then focused on developing natural, sustainable solutions to meet the growing expectations of a market that was increasingly aware of environmental and public health issues. In 2002, Techna took over Natual, a company specialising in plant extract-based products. In 2003, it entered the equine sector with the acquisition of PaskaCheval, followed by aquaculture with the creation of Aquatechna. In 2010, Techna again broadened its business portfolio to include plant production with the acquisition of Hexagri, which manufactures natural plant products.

Employee shareholders in the company

Techna's shareholding model, based on employee share ownership, is another pillar of its success. Since 1978, Techna has been a pioneer in opening up its capital to its teams. This atypical model, which is still in place today, not only ensures the company's independence, but also strengthens the commitment of its employees. By allowing teams to be more involved in strategic decisions, Techna creates an environment that fosters innovation and creativity. In the face of the challenges and crises that have marked its 60-year history, Techna has always been able to reinvent itself while remaining true to its DNA. The company is just as determined to meet the challenges of the years to come. The story continues every day!
